Harley mufflers

Harley mufflers was created by saltydog
It seems as if the used market for Harley parts is flooded with "new" or nearly new take off parts from the various Harleys. Most of the stuff is dirt cheap or free. I found a set of mufflers that apparently taken off before the bike left the showroom floor. They were in a dumpster, carefully packed in the box that the new mufflers came in. Wrapped in bubble wrap even. Since I could use some new mufflers on my 81 KZ1000, I am toying with the idea of putting them on my bike. I would have to cut my old ones off, come up with an adapter, since the Harleys are bigger in diameter at the inlet. I would also have to come up with a way to mount them. All these problems are not insurmountable, but I would hate to cut my exhaust and then decide that I didn't like them.
Has anyone done this before and what were the results? Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. I would like to find an old, ugly stock 4 into 2 system to experiment with.
Thanks,
Robert

I have a couple of these and put them on my KZ650. They are fairly loud and not very pleasing to the ear. The tone is fairly deep but in no way do they sound like a Harley. It just depends on what sound you like.

I used an adapter bought from an auto parts store, and just wired them on for a trial. Didn't like the sound, so I took them back off.

I wouldn't expect it to sound like a Harley. There's no way you could make four tiny, high reving pistons sound like two coffee can sized pistons that you can nearly count the revs they turn so slow. I'm just curious to know if I can utilize these or similar mufflers.

Most muffler shops can make you reducers/enlargers for you. GLuck!

I am sure you could get them on but i really do not think they would look right. Maybe a KZ1000 police or any bike that has the mufflers level with the ground and half hidden by the saddle bags but on a CSR i don't think they will look good. Those Dunstall knock offs are crap IMHO, just China junk that will be rusted and rattling in a couple years also wouldn't look right on a CSR.
those bagger mufflers make a good cheater bar :)

Technically, they are designed for much higher flow. Even the smallest Harley 883 cc, has to evacuate a 440 cc cylinder everytime. A 1000 cc 4 cylinder, only has to evacuate 250 cc everytime, and in a four, only one cylinder is evacuating at any given time. Basically, you could fit the muffler of a 250 cc single, or a 500 cc twin, on the 1000-4 and still would work about same as stock.

A Harley's muffler is simply too big. Would work but inefficiently. It would be too loud as gases are not slowed down enough, and likely will diminish the torque at low and mid revs because of said gases speed. Is not the size of the engine which matters, is the SIZE of the pistons and how many.

Hi Re the comment on the Dunstall knockoffs, cheap China crap.
From where I am with one of them sitting right here on my desk- the chrome finish looks pretty good to me. They are about half an inch shorter & very slightly more tapered than the stock mufflers on my KZ1100. However they will just bolt right on and if they are last a couple of years then no big deal at 69.99 pounds sterling.

Only time will tell and I will let you all see a picture in 2012!!!

I appreciate all of the comments, but even though I can make some educated guesses, myself, I am really looking for someone who may have actually done it.
As too appearance, I am slowly making my CSR into a cruiser. I have a police seat on it, aftermarket floorboards and a windshield. In my biased opinion, it doesn't look half bad. I'll try to get some pics this afternoon.
Thanks,
Robert
