750-4 oil filter cover stuck!! was created by polkat
Went to change the oil filter in my 750-4 for the first time. It's under a round cover on the bottom of the engine, and appears to be held in with a 17mm bolt in the center. Nothing I've done so far will loosen this bolt! Am I correct in assuming that the bolt loosens counter clockwise?
Is there some trick to getting it loose? Help!
Thanks!

i second the motion to get motor a little warm and if you dont have a breaker bar, try double wrenching it for leverage...put the closed end of a 17 on it and take a 16 and hook the closed end over the appropriate end of the 17....good luck

Well, the engine was hot when I dumped the old oil (that plug, also a 17mm, came loose easily), and the engine was still quite warm when I tried to loosen the filter bolt. I used a 15" breaker bar, and it ain't moving! I'd hate the idea of breaking it off, but the oil was old and I need that filter changed. I don't like the idea of hammering the bar, but may have no other recourse, unless someone can think of something else. I have heard that steel and aluminum ofter seize, and the bolt looks like steel. Maybe that's what's happened?

probably...if ya have to hammer it, start off slow and work your way up....the oil filter bolt is a pretty solid piece, but you dont want to goon something up.....good luck...

I'll give it a try and report back. I had thought of trying some penatrating oil, but it's upside down and pretty tight so I doubt any would get it. Ahh well.

If I can get it out, what can I do to prevent it again? Anti-seaze compound?

anti seize, or at the very least if you are going to change oil regularly, coat threads of filter bolt with clean oil..

lay it on it's side and use an impact gun on the filter bolt that will break it loose and yes it is counterclockwise to remove it. penitrating oil won't do anything the bolt is about 4 inches long and all the way thru the filter.

Well, the hammering got it, and luckily without damage. To my surprise the "bolt" is actually a wide, long tube thing with the pressure valve enclosed. Threads on the end are pretty big, so I'm not that surprised anymore that it was tight! By the way, the filter appeared the same at both ends, so I assumed it couled go in either way. That right?
Thanks again for the suggestions!

I suggest you use a torque wrench to re-install so you don't overtighten and use a new O-ring (the large outer one) on the cover. I found that once the o-ring became old and flattened the cover tended to stick to the oil pan and not want to turn and this made loosening the bolt more difficult. Ed

The "bolt" is your pressure release valve. Don't need antiseize because it's in the center of the engine sealed from the elements with all kinds of oil to keep it from ever seizing. They do seem to tighten themselves over time though. You'll never break the tube or strip the threads. If it's stuck get a bigger hammer. Use a 6 point socket with a long pipe extension on your ratchet if that's what it takes.
