Well, the engine was hot when I dumped the old oil (that plug, also a 17mm, came loose easily), and the engine was still quite warm when I tried to loosen the filter bolt. I used a 15" breaker bar, and it ain't moving! I'd hate the idea of breaking it off, but the oil was old and I need that filter changed. I don't like the idea of hammering the bar, but may have no other recourse, unless someone can think of something else. I have heard that steel and aluminum ofter seize, and the bolt looks like steel. Maybe that's what's happened?
probably...if ya have to hammer it, start off slow and work your way up....the oil filter bolt is a pretty solid piece, but you dont want to goon something up.....good luck...

If I can get it out, what can I do to prevent it again? Anti-seaze compound?

I'll give it a try and report back. I had thought of trying some penatrating oil, but it's upside down and pretty tight so I doubt any would get it. Ahh well.

anti seize, or at the very least if you are going to change oil regularly, coat threads of filter bolt with clean oil..

Well, the hammering got it, and luckily without damage. To my surprise the "bolt" is actually a wide, long tube thing with the pressure valve enclosed. Threads on the end are pretty big, so I'm not that surprised anymore that it was tight! By the way, the filter appeared the same at both ends, so I assumed it couled go in either way. That right?
Thanks again for the suggestions!
sweet when it works out.....on the big bikes 900/1000, it can go in either way......glad it worked out for ya.....
