How are the clearances checked? I'm guessing you remove the valve cover and use a feeler gauge to measure the gaps between the shims and the cams?

That's it. You rotate the cam so the lobe points directly away from the lifter and check the gap with feeler gauge. Removing the spark plugs makes the engine a lot easier to turn over, I use the kick starter but there is also a 17mm nut on the right hand end of the crankshaft..
