I'm rebuilding a 79 KZ 650C motor into an 810, it has 19,000 miles on it and once it was tore down I noticed some dull spots on the main bearings and large end con rod bearings with the conrod bearings being the worst.

So time for questions,

1. Normal wear and tear, or oiling system problems?? I spec'd out the oil pump and its fine but I never checked the oil pressure since the engine wasn't running when I got it. Would 19,000 miles of abuse do this?? Hopefully I'll have pics tomorrow.

2. Do I need to replace them?? Even if they are still within clearance specs. I'm going to be throwing more horse at the bottom end and I'm not sure if these can handle that. or are these things basically bulletproof and I shouldn't worry as long as they are in spec??

3. Where is the best place to get a good deal on these bearings?? At bike bandit I'd be spending 300 or so for the whole shebang. Anywhere else that sells these for cheap??

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I don't plan on having any work done to the crank. is it suggesteed for something like this?? it has less then .0005 of an inch runout and the spec is .0008 of an inch so its in fine condition.

The 650 had soft journal surfaces. Consider having it nitrided.

Wow, this is getting expensive. but I wanna do it right. the journals are all perfectly within spec. Nitriding is just making it really cold and bring it up to temp slowly right?? It doesn't add or remove material right?? just makes it hard and slippery??

From my understanding, yes, it is a heat-treating process that hardens the journals to make them more durable. I'm sure ApeJay has the official answer, though.

Nitriding is heating the crank slowly up to 850 or 950 to preserve the steel's original integrity then it's sprayed with ammonia gas, wich defuses into the surface forming ammonia nitride a ceramic like surface. The new surface is much harder than the original forged steel and has excellent lubricity properties. Crankshafts that have this done will be silver in color between the counterweights.

Well, I started saving my pennies. I quit drinking (I'm not an alcoholic I just go to the bar every now and then and it adds up quickly). I'm gonna send the crank to Ape for nitriding once I get enough saved up. I'm gonna take this motor slow but I'm gonna do it right. Thanks for your help everybody.
