My response will be thin on details, but my recollection is that there is a product that advertises the ability to do this. But if I remember right, the general consensus that I read on this board is that it doesn't really work that well...and doesn't last long either.

There have been other threads on this subject here somewhere.

There a product called Blue Job but I haven't heard anyone say it works and if you manage to get it off iy will require a lot of buffing and will just come back again.

There's also "blue away". Probably similar. What it is is an abrasive like a polish. You repeatedly polish the blue until it is gone. It does work. I bought my KZ1000E the pipe headers were really blue and I used this and my pipes are no longer blue. The negative is the pipes will never be as chrome and shiney as they once were, but the worst part is don't expect to rub the blue off in 5 minutes, it takes an hour or two per header pipe. Mine is still nice looking, but I've only ridden it around 100 miles since this.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

They will just turn really blue again, unless your jetting is WAY off, or you don't ride it.

Cheers.

BlueJob removed most of the brown staining on my mufflers, but it did nothing to the header pipe blueing.

So what you are saying is if your jetting is off you will not blue your pipes? Are you sure about that?

My new pipe has 500 miles on it with only a slight gold tinge. You can hardly notice it.

The bike runs like a champ.

Most aftermarket pipes are single wall tubing,to avoid having the pipes turn blue on a new bike, many Japanese manufacturers used double wall tubing.

He said "WAY off" - I think maybe he means super rich.
Excessive heat causes pipe blueing. And MFolks is right about the single walled pipes. What you could try is to load them up on the insides w a heavy oil or grease - coat them good, then run the bike. The theory is that the lube will burn to form a carbon layer that's supposedly heat protective. I have no idea if it really works, though.

I thought that running lean creates the super heated condition.

SO running too rich and running way lean both can cause overheating issues?

I bought some exhaust blue remover here in the UK and with a bit of hard work it really does remove the blue and yellow. However on my Z1 Classic it didn't take long for the colours to reappear so I am now going to live with it.
Just wondered what actually gets discoloured as it can't be the nickel plating beneath the chrome, and I thought it was the nickel that gave it shiny metal look.
