KZ1300 Oil Drain Plug... I feel stoopid was created by BLSSeattle
Hi all. I moved recently and lost my manual. I'm trying to drain/change the oil on my 79 KZ1300 and think I'm trying the right bolt for the drain plug. The one I'm trying is facing the front of the bike, in between the 3rd and 4th head pipe, in front of the filter. Am I crazy? I cannot get the bolt to budge. Just broke a 3/8th drive trying to get it off. I've used liquid wrench, tapped on it, and yet I can't get the bolt to budge. Who tightens a drain plug that tight??? The last thing I want is to break the head off of this bolt. Am I trying on the wrong bolt? Thanks!!!

I had to torch mine a little. Finally came loose.

Some threadlockers break down @400-500 degrees, right?

But who puts loctite on a drain plug?? I'm gonna have to keep at it, maybe get the engine hot and try it with a bigger drive... 1/2 or 3/4 inch.

"who puts loctite on a drain plug"...
That was rhetorically speaking right....

Some lazy ass PO most likely stripped the threads and had an oil leak or to cheap to buy a plug gasket...

Then sold the bike.... :S

Out of curiosity, anyone know if this is a counter thread bolt? Meaning reversed thread....

Does the 1300 have two oil drain plugs close to each other ? I was curious and took a look at the parts diagrams (1979 1290cc)on kawasaki.com. Looks like it might have two.
If thats the case then maybe the other one works. If the drain plug wont budge and you dont want to risk wrecking it can you drain the oil by undoing the filter bolt ?

If it has two I don't know where the other one might be. I'll look. From what know the threading is in the normal direction. I was told I could also heat up the pan, let it expand and then try to turn the bolt. Or heat the bolt, hit it with the PB/liquid wrench so it draws into the threads, and then try it. I sure hope the threads weren't crossed.

Could try ---
Heat area surrounding bolt head with propane torch;
Whack bolt head with a hammer;
Attempt to unscrew;
All while still hot.

Air impact driver may help.

Could apply dry ice to bolt head after torching the surrounding area, immediately before attempting to unscrew. Idea is to simultaneously shrink the bolt while expanding the surrounding aluminum area.

To gain better access ---
May carefully lay the bike over on its side, using proper padding such as old tires, cushions, mattress, blankets, etc., to prevent damage. Likely require two people for this large heavy bike. Best to first remove fuel tank and battery. May also require removal or other parts such as mufflers.

Good Luck! :)

I had the same problem in a A3 model, (diferent position of plug) after trying all sort of thinks the bolt head gone. But in this bike you always has a solution. REMOVE THE OIL PAN an take to a shop or DIY. The oil pan removal is a very easy job, I did it myself and using a bench end of the story.

I had a bike that I couldnt get the oil drain bolt loose so I just droped the oil filter instead. Of course this was a bottom mounted filter and not one that mounts to the front.

In the 1300 "any model" the oil filter is always in the bottom then you could partially drain the oil,(As Kawickrice say) Is the oil plug what is located in the front for A1 and A2 model A3 to onwards is in the very bottom,
