crankshaft kz 900
17 Mar 2006 16:41
The guy at my local bike shop did not have as much
enthusasim for my tired old 900 as i do. I took the motor in to see what he would charge to go through it.
$1800 dollars he says and he would not guarntee it.
yea, right.I ask him to mic everything and give me a parts list and Ill do it myself. He tells me that the
rods are scoured where the piston pins go through and rebuild would only result in lock up. so i get another crankshaft and looking at it it has the same light scratches that the one i have. is this common?

i bet he just happens to have a crank in the corner he'll sel you too!small scratches could just be from running dirty oil,if the pins spin freely in the rod and they dont rock in the rods i wouldnt worry too much about minor scratches if you cant feel them with your finger ,maybe run some real fine sand paper through there just enough to clean the glaze out of there and clean them really good. goodluck, happy wrenching!

i ran into the same thing, i took my 78 kz650 to carb shop. they said they couldn't garauntee any of the work. and they would need the bike or the carbs for about a month and a half. i don't think so. this was before i wanted to dig into it myself.
just like dealing with some old cars, some shops don't know about our older bikes, or just don't want to deal with older stuff that actaully takes manual work instead of hooking up a lap top, what i call no brainer work.

Never deal with anyone that wont warranty thier work.
if they have no faith in thier work then you shouldnt either.

Send your crankshaft to Gardner Racing. If Stan tells you it is no good, you can believe him.
