1 & 4 are the outside cylinders and 2 & 3 are the middle two. 1 is on the left side of the bike.

1 & 4 rise and fall together and 2 & 3 rise and fall together. When 1 is at TDC, 4 is also (unless the crankshaft is bent or twisted) while 2 & 3 are at BDC (180 degrees offset).

What is the firing order?

1342?

Or are 1 and 4 at TDC on the compression stroke at the same time, and 2 and 3 ? In which case the firing order will be 1&4 at the same time then 2&3?

even though the pistons are both up at the same time, the valve timing is 180 degrees away from each other. if number one cylinder is on the compression stroke getting ready to fire the air/fuel mixture, number four cylinder is on the exhaust stroke. you will get spark to both plugs at the same time but the exhaust valve will be open and is pretty much a wasted spark but that is normal

rstnick,,, I have always thought that the firing order for these was 1342 also, as any 4 cylinder I have ever worked on was. But I was corrected and had to check for myself.
If you look at the camshaft the order is 1243. Don't know why they did it that way, but they did.

with 2 seperate coils 1,4 fire at the same time at every revolution and the same for 2,3 if you switch the plugs between 1,4 or 2,3 it will still run
