Gated oil pan help was created by Headly
Gday to all, have decided to go with a gated pan instead of a deep one on my streetbike(as suggested).A couple of questions though.Where exactly does the gate fit in relation to the pan,and how high does it have to be(is it solid plate or does it need any flow holes etc or is that defeating the purpose?MY guess is that it is submerged in oil level all the time so the pump has a permanent supply.Does anyone have any pics of one that has been done(got the tig ready and keen to have a play)Sorry if these questions are obvious to some of you guys but i have only played with oil systems on our aussie valiants not on bikes much:blush: cheers.

oil pan gate is installed in the oil pan and prevents the air from moving away from the oil pump pickup with accelerating. If your oil light comes on when you are accelerating or doing a wheelie, this is what you need! Oil pan removal is required, so get a new oil filter and a oil pan gasket to complete the job.

An amazing fix that has been used for over 30 years!

I followed the link and see that the gate is for a KZ900-1000. Will it also work on the 73-75 Z1's?

98% of all Harleys ever sold are still on the road. The other 2% made it home.

I just(a couple of weeks ago) picked up a 73 z engine, and after pulling it apart,I found an installed oil-gate inside.Different than the one in the pics above, but the oil-pan is slightly different than the one in the pics also.
I just put that engine away into storage yesterday, after cleaning it at the carwash, but I'll get some pics of it later.
I'm sure that the pan that I removed from the 73 did not have those 3 sections of wall, like the ones in the pics, right at the gate.Unless, for some reason, they were removed,I think that pan is a better design, with that maze. That alone would slow the oil down from being pulled away from the pump.

I'll have a look and get some pics.I'm SURE that the one in my pan has 2 pins that act as stoppers for the gate.
Pretty sure a person could just take a cupboard-door hinge and modify it to work...why not?

Sounds reasonable to me, a hinge is a hinge. I could use it though as the oil light does come on when I hit it hard. Thanks in advance for the pics.

Here's the one I found in the 73 pan,and yes it did have the original walls in that area.I could clearly see where they were ground away...

you need to do this on all high performance z1's and kz's if you want to keep them alive under hard acceleration and dont grind out those baffles like the pan sandy got it's not a good idea.from 73 up it works on them all.

Ya...why WOULD the person who installed that gate, grind out that area?
In a case like this,isn't more,better(to a point?)

Just had a thought on that...

Maybe the baffles were removed for quicker fill-up,at the oil-pump?
Picture this...you touch your brakes to force the oil through the gate, and without the baffles there, the oil would enter the front quicker,no?

possible who knows what reason's some people have for doing things i'd use that pan myself but it's not something that is needed to be done.

Is there a preference over the welded fixed gate or the hinged type,I am now wondering which way to go after seeing pics of both,i guess the come down to personal choice.
