HEAD GASKET QUESTION was created by keith1
i ve put about 800 on bike since top end rebuild and i have a nagging little problem...on both sides of the head gasket, right at spot where the small bolt is, i get a few drops of oil after a ride....not a lot, just enough to show a little weepage.....i ve tightened down those two little bolts as much as i dare...i ve noticed they have no grade markings...my question is if i get a similar bolt in a grade 5 version and really sock it up,ya think the threads in the jugs would hold?....no leaks whatsoever anywhere else
in head gasket area and no other leaks on motor....i m guessing this little problem is due to the 10.5 to 1 comp........thanks for any input....keith

try give you head bolts a retorque it may solve your problem you don't want to over torque those 6 mm bolts anymore than you have to.

Looking at the shop manual for my 82 GPz1100 B2, the M6 X 1 bolts should be torqued to 87 inch pounds(these are the two small bolts next to the #1 and #4 sparkplugs).

Is the oil leaking around the bolts or next to them?

probably redundant, but did you torque your head bolts in the proper sequence as suggested in manual? It should not be weeping if done correctly, head flat, etc... Please don't try to solve the problem by over torquing the bolts! I would loosen them and start all over again.

head has been retorqued 3 times....i followed the sequence the guy who did my machine work gave me and he sold me the jugs , pistons and redid my cylinder head...guys got 30 years in the biz.....the seepage is at the extreme end of the head gasket on both sides right at the small bolts...like i said , it aint a lot, but there should be none....i was thinking how close is the closest oil route?......i was thinking of a grade 5 or better and putting a little 1194 on the unthreaded part...i had a few leaks on my pressure guage and i put 1194 on them and asembled and no leaks....best stuff ive found for stopping oil leaks.....use it on my rubber cam plugs also...good stuff.....

Pretty sure that hole doubles as an oil route. Best to keep any sealant goop away from it. Also, good chance you will strip out the aluminum threads before breaking the bolt so the bolt grade might be irrelevant.

As far as fixing the leak...not sure. I have the same problem but only on one side of the engine. I'm thinking about taking the head off over the winter and changing the head gasket but I don't want to end up with the same result. Someone else will have to chime in with the full-proof solution.

Likely an unnecessary reminder in this case, but be sure engine is completely cold when re-torquing.

Good Luck! :)

Torque the head again, and get better bolts, and replace to replace the small ones. Those bolts are soft, as are the cam cap bolts and rotor bolt.

Keith... Had the same issue with mine.... The bolts wouldn't snug tight or to torque so I went with a little longer SS bolt...

If you look directly under those bolt holes, they thread all the way through... Over the last 30 years of installing and removing, the present threads had loosen up a tad...

With a slightly longer bolt (1/8 - 3/16" for example), add a washer & the bolt tip can now secure to new threads...

Just a thought....
