GPZ1100 engine, what to keep? was created by Sandy
I acquired 2 motors...an early Z900(73) and an 83 GPZ1100(headless).
From the cylinders down, its all there though.(with pistons)
I've already pulled the 900 engine apart down to the crank, and will get to the GPZ engine soon.
I got a bonus on the 900 engine though...it has an oil-gate installed in the oil-pan. B)
I'll probably just shelf all the parts, but I'd like to know what,if any parts from the GPZ engine are compatible with the KZ engine?
Clutch,tranny...???
Any stronger,better internal parts?

Thanks Guys

Very few parts will interchange. The GPz 1100 is basically a J-engine (hy-vo cam chain, 6-bolt clutch etc.) so it's a very different creature from the early 900/1000s.

Here's a link to APE's site that will answer at least some of your questions: CLICK .

im building a few of these 83/84 gpz motors force/fed by magnuson 80 and 110 blowers for landspeed/racing and if you decide that you have no use for them i'd be interested in taking it of your hands :cheer:

sandy the crankshaft from the 83-84 gpz is very desirable for high horse power race motors because of the 18mm wristpin that they use also the transmission is often swaped into early cases because the output shaft is heavier duty

I'll let you know if I'm going to part with any of it,once I get it stripped down, and do some more research on the internal parts.
I knew there were stronger parts in the GPZ engines, but couldn't remember the details.(Thanks Tim).
I'll have to make sure that it IS in fact an 83 engine.I'll pull the cylinders off soon and get the pistons off and measure the rod bore to verify.
So the "83-84" GPZ1100 crank will NOT fit in ANY KZ cases,Tim?
And the output shaft,Tim...is that a drop-in fit,in a KZ case?
Thanks

the tranny is fairly easy you have to buy a conversion bearing kit for it and it drops right in i also think but i'm not sure they are a different gearratio then stock kz's the crank shaft uses the hy-vo chain so what most guy's do is replace the center pin with one fron a mk11 motor 16 pin peanut link. also one other thing about the gpz rods is like all the j motors the rods are .040" shorter then kz rods so you have to monkey around with your deck heights to get them to work properly it can be hard but once you figure it out that motor is awesome and super strong.

Interesting stuff, Tim. I knew about the crank and rods, but I didn't know you could fit a J tranny in the early cases.

I know were there's a complete motor still in the bike and it's for sale. Bike is rough, been sitting for years. Motor is low mileage. If you're interested, it's in Illinois. PM me and I'll put you in touch with the guy.
