Transmission Issues was created by sramsey216
My transmission no longer shifts into gear properly. When upshifting the shift lever remains in the "up" position and doesn't "snap" back down to engage the next gear. I have to manually reset the position of the shifter by doing a sort of half of a down shift. Same thing happens on the downshift, I have to do half an upshift (gently positioning the lever in the right position).
Is there a spring or mechanism that forces the shift lever into the proper position after a shift that might be broken or disconnected?
I also can't shift into neutral.
Thanks in advance.

Two common causes are -
1. Broken or dislodged return spring. Yes, there is one.
2. Serious build-up of grunge on the shifter shaft where it goes through the sprocket cover.

pop off your countershaft sprocket cover and chain and sprocket then pull off the trap door and check the springs and linkage.drain the oil before removing the trap door and make sure you buy a new gasket, this is one of those places where you definately want a gasket
