First off, this is a great and very helpful site.
That said, I am having a heck of a time with
my 1983 Kaw Spectre 1100 D2.

History:
Bike sat for 5-6 years.
Has a mac pipe and a dyna jet kit.
Jets are #120/#35 Clip is on 2nd from top.
Carbs have been cleaned and checked several times.
( I can't sleep at night until I disassemble/reassemble carbs)
All vacuum lines have been replaced, clean air system removed, block offs in place, new vacuum plugs on 1,3,4.
New orings in carbs, new carb manifolds, new fuel line, tank was cleaned and sealed. Petcock in good working order.
Fuel/air screw 1.5 turns out.
Spark advance cleaned and lubed, checked visually to be working.
Slides working properly, started with air box(stock) removed
and they return quickly.
New throttle cable, lubed, snaps right back.

Problem:

With choke on bike revs out of control up to 5000rpms,
push in choke and it idles at 1000rpms. If you rev it up with the throttle from there, the idle hangs and comes down slowly, but over 4000rpms, won't come down.

There are no vacuum leaks, I have checked with wd-40, carb cleaner, starter fluid and water.

Any help would be great and thanks again for such a great site.

Most of the usual causes seem to have been already ruled out.

Random thoughts --

Are the pilot air screw plugs in place?

Do the choke plunger tips have pads to supposedly seal off choke function when the choke is off?

The choke plungers are:blink: working.

I replaced the pilot plug orings, but I think I got the wrong size. I do not feel they were snug enough. I have ordered new ones, I have a feeling this is the issue.

Of course I have had this feeling about a few other things that were causing the problem.

Sounds lean...

1) Intake/exhaust manifold leaks.
2) Timing jittery? bad points/condenser/advancer?
3) sticky floats?


Check vacuum on a manometer while revving.

Something tells me there's a lot more to this story that led to this ;)

Has anyone messed with the synch adjusters?

I've seen carbs rev like that when the synch adjusters are all out of wack. Usually happens when one carb was way off from the others and someone cranked the synch adjuster a bunch of turns.....

Rode it to work today!!
I love parking my metrics in the service lobby of an H-D dealership.
Got the check valve o-rings yesterday, bike no longer hangs at 5k. Drops good until 3500rpm then slow until 1000rpm.
Going to synch on sunday.
Still running rich.
should I change the pilot to a #37.5?
and the main to #117.5?

Stock 34MM with dyno jet kit, stock air cleaner, very non-restricted mac pipe.

The mains seem small to me. I'm running 122.5 in my 28mm carbs.I was running 140's in my 34mm with the cams and 1075 kit.

Have you checked your valve clearance lately?
