I recall on my twin, the gaps on the top and bottom ring go forward and the middle ring gap goes to the rear.

I place the oil rings at 120 degrees and the compression rings over the wrist pins at 180 degrees.The rings will rotate on the piston

The Kawasaki factory service manual describes this in detail. You probably shouldn't plan to rebuild the engine without the manual as it contains other information (torque specs, service limits, head bolt tightening sequence, etc.) you will need. The manuals are nearly always for sale on eBay; just be sure to get the one for your specific model/year. Ed

I don't think they are supposed to move after they are installed. I took the factory pistons out of mine after 75,000 miles and they were still exactly aligned per spec: top and bottom dead front, middle straight back. I don't think they move in service.
