removal of engine was created by Twichel04
Newbie here, not just to the site, this is my first motorcycle project, i have a 1984 KZ550. i have it almost completely stripped, i am trying to remove the engine, trans and drive shaft so i can start prepping the frame for paint. i have, so far, unbolted the motor and trans from the frame, but i am unsure of the best (or correct way) to detach it all from the drive shaft. any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

For rear wheel, make sure its up on the center stand, unhook any torque bars, brakes, etc, and then pull the rear axle out, and then the rear wheel should be able to be manuevered out. Also, any axle spacers you can remove. This was how my Honda CX500 came out and I imagine the Kawi will be close.

Somewhere, probably near the front joint, there should be a pin of some sort the when removed, the shaft will slide off the front bevel gear shaft. The one of the KZ1000st biek I had was very small...over looked it for quite awhile before I found it but it's there. Once you get that done, the rest of the shaft assembly just slides off and back. Thenit's jsut like Kawiconvert says...matter of spacers, bars, etc. that needs to be removed. Once you get started, it will let you know what needs to be taken off to remove the wheel.

finaly got the engine out, had to angle it out the side, turn it on its side and pull and the shaft slid right out. (now mind you this took place with two ppl on a tiny porch, so it took about 3 hours)

Good. Amazing how something that looks so simple can sometimes be such a pain! But...once again, where there's a will, there's a way.
