Crunchy noise from the CS sprocket was created by markk53
I know my ZR isn't a KZ, but the engine is pretty much pure KZ/GPz 550 territory. What I want to know is if anyone else here has a crunching noise from the countershaft sprocket when under load of acceleration.

I know it's the countershaft sprocket, because I took it off and greased up the splines with wheel bearing grease and the crunch went away. Now it's back. Any thoughts or solutions? It has the 1/8 (or whatever, I don't know how many grooves so I guessed 8) turn bolt on retainer for the sprocket. I thought about shimming the sprocket to snug it up, no wobble, if that might be it. I know it isn't bearings and chain, like I said the heavy grease took it away for a while.

sounds like the splines on output shaft or sprocket are worn letting gear rock back and forth, not a good thing! :S is the nut on the sprocket tight? if nut is still tight pull the sprocket off and inspect splines for slop B)

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

Would also assure alignment of drive chain on both sprockets. Can sight down chain from rear sprosket and be certain chain engages countershaft sprocket straight on and does not hit it at an angle.

And doublecheck rear wheel alignment by measuring both sides from center of swingarm pivot bolt to center of rear axle. Do not rely on the raised swingarm marks (at least until verifying their locations via the physical measurements on both sides from the swingarm pivot bolt to the rear axle.)

Good Luck! :)

 What condition is the chain? Sprockets?

Chain slack adjusted to specs?

Any kinks in chain? Chain properly lubed especially if a non-O-ring chain.

Good Luck! :)

Everything looks good, no hook, chain is good O-ring, wear pattern on sprockets indicate chain is not running out of line. The Zephyr has the retainer clip with two small bolts. The sprocket doesn't seem to have much play. I asked because I didn't get much in other forums. It went away with grease on the splines and now again with a good lube of the chain, may have been a bit too dry, but I'm not sure that's it. I guess we keep riding and see... Thanks, I appreciate the response.

normally if the chain get's overly dry you will be able to hear it when your pushing the bike around. it can also make noises if the chain is adjusted to tight.
