Horrible Disaster KZ-650E was created by sofireguy
Hi everyone, I'm new here but I was wanting to see what people's thoughts were on this. I was riding one night with my friends on my 1980 KZ-650E and pulled up to a stop sign and pulled the clutch in 1st. When I pulled it i felt a snap and the bike jumped forward (after the snap the clutch engaged). So I ride home with no clutch since I've done it before with a broken clutch cable.

Well I pulled it apart today to change the cable since it had symptoms of a simple cable snap... Well I pull the chain cover off and it's a holy hell of a mess on the front sprocket. A nice hefty chunk of the crankcase broke off and got caught on the chain and broke the safety plate for the front sprocket.. I'll get some pictures up but I'm pretty sure it's too dangerous to try and weld it back together given it is aluminum and it would be put under high stress from the clutch cable...

Look like a new engine??? :'(

On closer look, that appears to be the case next to the neutral switch. Hmm, probably in need of a new upper case. Welding would fix, but may throw other parts off.

It is a plain bearing crank. Can't just replace the upper case.

No need to panic just yet. Your picture is a bit blurry, but as far as I can tell you have a broken mission cover and a bent clutch pushrod - both parts are replaceable without tearing the engine apart, you will need a new gasket for the mission cover though and probably new seals for output shaft, shift lever shaft and push rod too. Provided there's no damage to the cases themselves it's not too big a deal to fix.

I agree with OnkelB :) [how you been Bob  ...just kidding]

Kind of hard to tell from that pic, but it looks like the trans cover that's broken. If that's so, you're in good shape.

Question is, what caused it? Something get bound up in your chain or what?
