i think he means the charging system parts.
i really don't think so since a j motor has two different stators. large and small i call them.

is that what you ment?

someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

My understanding is the alternator has two parts, the stationary or stator with the wire windings, and the rotor, comprised of magnets that rotate, sometimes called the flywheel.

As for compatibilty with other models,I'll leave that to someone with more experiance.

I don't think the 81 and up parts will interchange.

From what I can gather, these are the bikes that use the 81-up stator and flywheel.

1981-1983 KZ1000J

1981-1983 KZ1000 LTD

1981-1982 KZ1000 CSR

1982-1995 KZ1000P

1996-2005 KZ1000P

1982-1983 KZ1000R

1981-1982 KZ1100B/GPZ1100

1982-1983 KZ1100D SPECTRE

1983 KZ1100L LTD

1981-1982 ZN11OO LTD

1983-1985 ZX1100/GPZ1100R

Looks like 73-78 are the same:

1978 KZ1000 ZR1

1977-1978 KZ1000 LTD.

1977-1978 KZ1000A

1973-1976 KZ900/Z1

79' is different again.

thanks for the info, i was talking about the rotor, i took my generator cover off to replace a leaky gasket and i found that one of my rotor magnets had cracked in half and was loose, lucky i found it before it did some damage. i have a chance to buy a complete kz 1000 engine, hoping the rotor will interchange with my 81 kz 1000 j
