Cleaning valve cover assembly was created by TheSnodge
I'm changing my shims and while the valve cover is off I would like to clean it. What's the best thing to use on the cover, exhaust reeds, and the cap above the reeds? The grime is layered on. Carb cleaner?

Be careful about what you use. Simple green might work, but avoid the Castrol spray cleaner as it will attack aluminum.

Check for compatabilty on the back of the spray bottles or liquid cleaners.

While you've got the cover off, why not remove the reed valves and install block off plates from www.aperaceparts.com

Would the block off plates add to performance? I read a little about the top air assembly in the Clymer, but what exactly does it do?

I think if you go to these websites, they can explain about removing the reed valves and air switch assemblies on the Kawasaki Clean Air Suction System (CASS):

I have found that WD-40 and a brass brush will loosen gunk like that up. Then spay with carb cleaner or MEK. I cleaned the engine in my avatar (inside and out when I rebuilt it) with nothing more than WD-40, MEK and a brass pot scrubber. Took 40,000 miles of gunk off in minutes.

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.

Kawasaki recommends that the reeds are cleaned with a high flash-point solvent.

On the reeds too?

Someone suggested seafoam for the reeds, but I haven't seen it anywhere.
