KZ650 in a KZ550 frame? was created by EtienneS
 As you guys can see from my avatar pic, I have a custom 1981 custom KZ550 fitted with a KZ550 D motor. I believe this motor is also a GPZ550 motor.

I don't get spares for a KZ550 or a GPZ550 here in South-Africa. That got me thinking ...

Can I fit a Z650 motor? Those are quit popular here in S.A.

I now you smart and very wise guys out there has given this a though some time.

Not sure it would be a dirrect swap, but if some can put a kz1000 engine in a kz650, I'd think the 650 engine should fit in a 550 with possable engine mount adjustments made.

Let us know if you make it work!

Measure your engine mounts and I'll give you what the 650 engine has. Thats the best bet without actually doing it.

If you can't do cutting and welding, it's not going to bolt in. The 650 motor is significantly different/bigger than the 550.

And as the 750 is same size as the 650, why not the 750 for the same trouble?

Did anybody ever find out how difficult this was?

I am asking because I have a chance to pick up a complete '85 GPZ550 without a motor/carbs/exhaust for cheap... everything else is there.

I can weld/cut/fabricate... and I have a spare 650 motor/carbs/exhaust sitting in the corner.

The motors look similar in pictures... engine mounting points look very close - the 650 motor must be wider for sure... maybe a bit taller?

Any ideas?
