If sitting on the bike, #1 is on the left, #4 is on the right. Or, put another way, #1 is on the side you shift with, and #4 is on the side with the rear brake.

#1 Port side of bike. #4 Starboard side of bike.

Yes, that's correct. They are numbered in order from left to right. The firing order will be different that that though. Can't remember off hand what it is.
