Hi, I have to take the cylinder head off because I have a broken exhaust stud and head that needs to be welded back on. I also have a really lose cam chain. I bought a Ape cam chain tensioner and it took up the slack.
I already bought a new chain and link and all the guides for the chain. I was also going to replace the valve guide seals sense I was in there.
My question is what else should I replace while I have the cylinder and the head off?
Just wanted to do a light freshening of the top end.
Thanks

Not really sure what to look for. The bike runs strong does not burn any oil but has 40K miles on it. When you say a valve job do you mean the shims?

At a minimum I would lap the valves and replace the springs and seals. then bench shim it.

Should I use oem parts or after market parts? I would like to upgrade the parts if posssible. I Little better performance if I can.
so far:
Cam chain and guides
lap the valves
replace the springs and valve seals.
bench shim it
Anything else that while the top end is off?
Was thinking about the rings?

if you have not yet, i would run a compression test before removing the head.
if it's good, why replace the rings?
this is how it starts.
just a little "clean up"
next thing you know your looking at www.kzzone.com
and www.z1enterprises.com at all hours of the night and day. then your credit cards are maxed out, your garage has more parts then you know what to do with and you have not seen the wife/girlfriend in a week.
the addiction to these old girls is a bitch once it gets hold.

It is to late for that I'm hooked. I think I like wrenching it more than riding it. Just love the sight of the little brown truck pulling up beside the curb with some new parts for my baby.
