Same problem with the shifting on my KZ650 '77 Why does it shift ok from first, neutral and second but wont go through any other gears when it not running? But running it shifts hard and wont find neutral. The clutch is adjusted perfectly and while riding it shifts ok through All the gears when clutching.I've got new clean oil with Lucus Oil added and no difference. It worked good once before now it just Hard.I have a good clutch.? Still bummed and my toes on my left foot are sore. :S

Sounds to me like the clutch is not fully disengaging. With the engine off and the tranny in gear and the clutch lever pulled, does the bike roll easily? If not, then the clutch is probably not releasing properly. What sort of additive is that Lucas business? Is it designed for wet clutches? If not, could it be causing the plates to stick together?
Oh yeah, be careful with the shifter. Forcing it is not only hard on the toes, but may bend the shift forks, and fixin' that ain't no fun.

As RonKZ650 once pointed out, the 1977 KZ650 did not have the neutral finder, 1978 up did. Well documented what the neutral finder is, it makes upshift from first to neutral at a standstill always go to neutral. The output shaft has to be spinning to access second gear on the 1978 up models. The 1977 KZ650 you can shift all the gears at standstill. If you can't shift your '77 KZ650 through all gears with the engine shut off someone may have pulled a switcharoo on the engine or tranny at some time in the past. Ed
