My Little Barn find KZ200 is still Fighting with me.

I noticed a little oil leaking from the Left Side engine case cover and decided to yank it and check it out.

I noticed the stator and flywheel were sitting in oil. I Just Assumed the stator was always supposed to be dry? I checked out Bike Bandit for a crank seal but the schematics do not show one?

This thing just cannot be half submerged in oil....Can it?

Am I missing something here?

If your bike is built like the bigger 4's are, the alternator needs oil lubrication for cooling and the starter system over running clutch needs it too.

I Guess it is . There isnt a Seal in the schematics and I for sure do not see one behind the setup.

Wouldnt the stator short out being wet?

Not if the windings are coated/varnished when the alternator was built. Most are constructed with magnet wire that has a coating on it, and then after assembly the stator is put in a vacuum chamber where it is heated sealing the windings.

Go to www.electrosport.com and read up on alternator stator construction.

D, not familiar w/your bike, but if cover is still off, take a look at the cases. on engines which use oil bath for stator cooling there are open windows from stator area to crankshaft chamber. I believe there should still be a crank seal at either end in order to provide oil presure to big end rod bearings. luck g

The stator would short out in dry conditions if it wasn't sealed. It'll work in oil or air and I've seen both setups used on bikes. Mainly the oiled are on streetbikes and air/dry are on dirtbikes.
