Cylinder Head ?'s was created by wrangler615
Well guys, looks like I'm in the market for a used cylinder head for my 83 KZ750F. Current head is at the machine shop with a bent intake valve from the PO. This explains a lot of my driveability issues... In order to do the valve job though it is gonna need the exhaust valves replaced also due due needing to grind too much off the stem. So after the minimum 5 valves and a valve job I'm looking at about 300 bucks. I've decided to look into a used head and need to know what will cross over. I know the 550's are to narrow, and wondered if a 650 will fit. My year is the first year of electronic tach as far as I know, but will the pre '83 750 heads fit ok? Can I just block off the tach drive? I have the resources to do whatever for things like that, just need the input on what is gonna bolt on.

Thanks!
Justin

A used head will cost a couple of hundred bucks and then you will (at minimum) need to lap the valves and replace the seals, maybe replace a couple of valves as well. I don't think $300 is out of line to put your current head in to proper order, the used head route could end up costing you more.

I have a spare off an 82 that I may be willing to part with. I just need to crack the top off the one I'm going to work on to make sure its good before I let the other go. Just send a pm.

I may be in touch KawiConvert. I am looking at getting all new exhaust and intake valves, but they seem to be averaging 20 bucks apiece. Plus the new seals, and whatever else... This is supposed to be a budget build(oxymoron I know). I mostly just need to know that an earlier model 750 head will fit my year engine(1983).

From the part numbers I have looked at, the only difference I can find is that mine is painted black. They use the same head gasket and valve guides. There are more numbers to cross check, but I find it unlikely they changed much from 82-83. Even if the 82 is technically a gpz, because the gpz didn't change much engine wise until 1983.

I checked, the one I'm using looks good so the 82 gpz head is up for grabs. If your tearing it down anyways, bead blasting it wouldn't be all that hard to take the black paint off. Just an idea. I'm thinking of doing that and some gunkote on mine. Send me your email through pm and I'll send some pictures of the 82 750 head.

I will have to take a look, but I may also have a bare 750 head. Mine would be silver. I also have a set of 750 valves. The guides in this head if I remember correctly were good. If I do have it I can also do a complete valve job on it.

Understand, if the seats have been cut so deep that the valves have to be tipped too much, that problem probably can't be fixed with new valves, as they would have to be tipped too.

Why did the shop cut the seats so deep?

From what I understand, the stem height is going to be too tall after regrinding the valves themselves and lapping them in. They were pretty beat up, with bad sealing surfaces. The shop has not actually done any grinding of anything yet, only taken measurements. This is a good shop that does both auto and motorcycle machine work. We use them alot through my auto repair shop that I work at, I trust them and they have an excellent reputation around town.

Then You probably don't need new valves. Shops with a lot of KZ head experience know how to make it all work.
