riddle me this...

82 kz1000ltd..clutch cable is too long but don't think it's causing this problem..on occasion when i hammer it..it feels like the clutch cble goes completely slack..so i pull over..rattle the cable near wear it goes into the case..boom..pops right back..get back on hammer again..ditto..wtf??

how is it during normal riding? any slack or play at all?

no..fells very smooth..lubed the shit out of it..thinking it's the actuator that pushes on the cluthch rod to engage/disengage it...so maybe a new case..??

Have you actually followed the factory instructions on how to adjust the clutch? It's not enough to just set the slack at the lever.

My vote is the combination of speed shifting and aged clutch springs.

any thoughts as to what year has the shortest clutch cable??

is the weak little spring inside on the cable where it pushes against the inner sprocket/actuators cases hole and the acuator arm?are all of the bolts on the sprockett cover tightened by a hand wrench to tight......is the clutch actuator set by the manual to a half turn back from seating and the lock nut tightened?is this the first step you took then worked your way back to the bars via the adjusters inline turnbuckles and then the final clutch perch adjuster......if so do you have a lubed and straight pushrod and bearing in the motor?and if so do you know if the springs or clutch friction plates are in decent shape????good luck ...craig

i would try cable for an elr. they had superbike bars from the factory i believe, shorter than ltd bars and same engine

You might explore 1978/1980 Z1R cables...

You can get the standard J model cable, its what I got after I changed ther bars on my 82 LTD. Its 52.5 in compared to 58.5 in still a little long for my bike. www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=271

you might also want to check that your clutch basket is in good repair...if it is "notched" it will/could hang up the clutch....
something to check if the cable swap doesnt fix it
