what starter motors will fit 73-82 kz big fours...

anyone got the info or had any luck using different years starters.....on z1900,kz900,kz1000,mk11,kz1000st,or jmotors??????
i think i saw somewhere that the starters are similair enough to switch from model to model...more precise i have an extra kz900 starter and wanna know if it will mate to my 81kz1000j model...as it needs one...i have the j cover for it......thanks....craig

the j has the better four brush starter but yes, you can interchange them.

i knew it ...i saw it somewhere...there is talk of a cb1100f starter being able to be modded to fit and offering more cranking power......my 900 starts with the touch of the thumb...and can crank and crank and crank if needed so what would i be wanting to beef up the starte for....anyhow...different pony i guess....thanks folks ..silly question i guess...but i need to know by next months toying around......kawsakiman wrote:

I believe there was a design change around 1977 0r '78, but I think they will al interchange.

i got one kz900 in my rider ..one kz1000 in z-1e project boat anchor motor and one 73 z1-e that had been in the z-1e when it survived a garrage fire ....the fire removed one had everything just melted/cracked black lead so i tossed it in a box...getting to wonder if i get my paws on a kz1000j starter snake w/wire and remount it....hhhhhmmmm....cheap ass i know...the conversion answers helped thanks guys,,,,ebay cop bike starter if i ever can win the damn bid on one.....peace bros

If you have to buy one, get the Honda

the starters from the cb900-1100 (double overhead cams)are the ones you want.i think they are 9 amp(?) starters compared to the 7 amp(?) kawi ones.especially for big bores and high compression.i just got one(1980 cb 1100 f)and am fixing to install it and see for myself how much better it is.
