whatever you do don't check the valve clearence, its not that important that the valves be closed to run properly,

Since i don't have the camshafts in, all the valves are closed. Still coming up with poor compression. Will have to order a leak down tester, so i guess i will have more time to wait. To me it is just odd that this head came off a running bike with good compression about 2 months ago, and now i throw it on my bike and i am checking to see if i am losing compression through the valves? It shouldnt be. Also, i cant see the problem being rings, as i had good compression before i pulled the gpz head. I guess we will see where i am losing compression when i get my hands on a leak-down tester.

You cant do a compression test with the cams out. it needs to suck air in and compress it. This is the same reason people say do a compression test with the throttle wide open.

thank you for that answer. My buddy just mentioned that to me tonight, and now i feel like a retard for not realizing it. I am busy for a couple days, but will hit it pretty hard again asap and be back on the road soon.

cams in, timed, everything reassembled, good compression, good spark, but wont start. By the time i got it put together it was getting pretty late so i just cranked it over to see if it would even try to start. Wires are in the right order. Should be getting fuel, i sprayed starting fluid in the carbs a couple times, and just got a flame out the exhaust. No loud popping, or attempt to start! WTF!!!

what were the compression #'s?? Try putting you hand over the carb one at a time while cranking. Your hand should get covered in gas when you do this.

Bike is running now, but the topend change did not get rid of the knock that i tore it down to fix. Still runs as good as ever, but with an annoying knock. If a circlip came out on one of my pistons, what would happen? Would it cause a knock?
