Today it was so nice out I decided to finally change out my head gasket and cam cap plugs. Thanks to all the help from everyone here, I had the courage to try it.

Although I didn't have to, I dropped the exhaust for easier access.

While I had the bike apart I noticed a few things:

1. Cylinder #1 had a heavy carbon buildup in the exhaust port. This is right where there was an oil leak. Could this build up be cause by the oil or is it not running right? I know that this cylinder is firing because the pipe gets hot.

2. I also noticed some leakage around the exhaust pipes. I don't think that there were washers in place in all 4 cylinders. I need to get new ones before I ride.

3. I am also getting a leak around the tach seal. I know that someone said they had to have their bike head off to change this, but on mine, '80, 1000 classic, I can do this with the head on.

Anyway, it was a great way to spend the afternoon. I got a couple of items crossed off the list and learn more about my bike.
