Changing The Infamous Starter Clutch On 750 Twin

- Walking Behind the Corn May Not Be All That!
My starter clutch started groaning at less than 12K miles. I pulled it out and left it out. It doesn't take much wear for the rollers to make noise. These marks could just be felt. Steell, on self imposed exile, suggested that the smallest wear mark that can be felt is about .001". I could feel these.

I didn't see much wear on the hub face of my gear. I polished it with some #400 paper and it looked pretty smooth. BTW: the used one I got for parts, the hub looked smooth.... but I measured the diameter of mine and got 1.666" and I measured the used (smooth) one and it was 1.662 which meant the nice smooth surface was that way because it was worn down some.

Clutch assembly parts. Broken spring was the problem. 2 rollers won't lock up against the starter sprocket.

That's true, and I keep telling myself that today every time I stand up and by back ouches at me.....:laugh:Bountyhunter, Even though you didn't need a rebuild, I imagine you are glad to know it is in good shape.

That wouldn't work for me, I could not get enough torque on it twisting from just one side even with a hammer. I ended up sticking my two biggest phillips screwdrivers into either side of the axle and twisting with both hands. Finally popped loose.
