Timing Advance was created by kidstar64
Hello,

This is my first post here and I am looking for some help/advise. I recently bought a '82 kz440 ltd belt drive. After a tune up and re-tightening of the cylinder head bolts, it runs well once its warm. My problem is a bog when first coming on to the throttle. It is a electronic timing advance but the arm that swings up on the case has some rust on it and it looks like it might not be moving freely. I tried using a lube like WD-40, but a bit tackier and it just burns off. Any suggestions on what I should use?

Hello, kidstar64, and WELCOME to KZR! :)
We're glad you're here! :cheer:

For advancer lube, I prefer Moly grease.

If not already done, would consider removing and cleaning the advancer unit.

Good Luck! :)

Thanks for the reply! I never even thought of moly grease. Also, is much involved in taking out the timing advance?

Haven't been into a 440, so guessing ---

Remove points cover.
Advancer is behind the pick-up coil plate.
Probably need to remove pickup coil plate.

Advancer is held in position by bolt threaded into end of crankshaft

Hold larger "fake" nut with 17mm? wrench. Unscrew bolt (13mm or 14mm).

Clean and lube advancer. Reassemble.

Re-set ignition timing. Best imo to use strobe type timing light which also enables watching advancer move back and forth as rpm's are varied by blipping the throttle.

Here's the kawasaki.com diagram.

Good Luck! :)
