Base Gasket? was created by Born Dead 2
Hey all,

So I picked up yet another bike last night for next to nothing. An 84 Kz750 chain drive. The guy I got it from tried to chop it but well you all know where that got him. So anyway my question is apparently the motor was worked on, rings were done and base and head gasket were replaced. Bike runs smoothly, but the base gasket seems to be leaking on the left side(shifter side). I checked the head bolts, all were in spec. Aside from the bike looks like shit and needs some major cosmetic work, the engine is sound just the base gasket is leaking.
Any ideas what this can be caused by?
Thanks in advance.

Never mind, apparently whoever did the work on this bike used a shitty gasket kit and no sealer. Time to tear another motor down after I fix the carb problem on my other bike. Oh when does it end??

unless it is a copper base gasket all fiber gaskets are put in dry.

True and thanks for everything you have mentioned to me. So here is an update also. So I decided to pull the head and cylinders and what to my surprise? Well who ever worked on this previously did replace the rings, but used what looks like an Athena gasket kit and used Black gasket maker on both sides of the base gasket?
So what you said Timebomb about a base gasket going in dry, wasn't done on this motor job. So I'm guessing this is the culprit to the leak. So time to order another kit. Anyone know if there is a better one than Athena out there but not as pricey as the Kawi replacement?
Thanks

I need to do a base gasket job myself. When I did a ring job on my A2, it was a real PITA to scrape the factory gasket off. I put the replacement on dry but it leaks enough to make my boot toe wet with oil. I am going to goop it down this time. I am also going to goop down that oring in the cam chain channel too....chris3

if it's leaking it will be either because the gasket surfaces aren't quite true or the surfaces have some gouging in them from scraping or i have seen some guy's use 3M pads to remove the gasket.scary. the athena gasket kit is one of the best you can buy. as far as buying individual gaskets not kits try Cometic they are the same gaskets that most of the piston makers send with there kits i have had very good luck with those made in the states as well in case that maters

I used an Athena base gasket in my rebuild and it disntegrated in about 1/2 hour of running time. This guy probably got one just like it. The black sealer is probably all that is keeping any oil in at all.

I made my own gasket the second time and it is working fine.
