Hello
i am new to the forum this is my first post,
i picked up a clean stock 81' kz1100 pulled the carbs off to clean them and to rebuild themput a new agm battery in it got good compression all cylinders are between 118 and 122 now the bad the tranny will shift into first and back to neutral but will not go into 2,3,4,or 5th i pulled the side cover off and cannot see anything wrong visually, has this ever happened to anyone with this paticular bike, this is reall frustrating i haven't even give it a good bath yet this thing is in really good shape always kept inside i sure hope the motor don't need to be split:unsure:
anyone got any idea's any help will be appreciated

thanks Ted

Hello, Ted, and WELCOME to KZR! :)
We're glad you're here! :cheer:

Bike likely has a safety-convenience feature whereby transmission won't shift above neutral unless the rear wheel is rolling (or turning) forward.

Give it a try while the rear wheel is rotating forward, and hopefully snick right into 2nd gear.

Good Luck! :)

Ted, Not intimate w/ the 11, but on earlier zed,s there exists a peculuar mechaniszm within the countershaft which requires motion at speed to engage 2nd & upper gears. In essence, centrifical force causes ball bearings to force gears into relitive positions. before going back in, try, bringing eng to temp, elevate rear wheel, and w/tire spinning attempt up-shifts. ope this helps. the bike has to be moving in order to get it into second gear. don't freak out its normal.

If on the center stand, just spin the rear wheel forward by hand, and while its still rotating, shift into 2nd gear.

Okay for engine to be cold.

If center stand not available, may just sit astride the bike, roll bike forward (or get a helping push), and while moving forward, shift into second gear.

The design makes it easy to find neutral when the bike is stationary. And undertaking normal first gear start off.

Good Luck! :)

That compression seems a little low. You might want to set the valves and see if it improves. I think it shoul dbe in the 140 to 150 range.
