82 KZ1000 LTD engine serial numbers was created by bhanse
I went into the archives to check on the begining and ending engine ser.no.for my bike....the serial numbers for the 82 LTD go from KZT00JE019201 to 034189. So my engine should fall between these numbers....it doesn't...the serial number on my bike is 034231...so this engine falls after end of model year....Now I found the 82 STD (J2) engine numbers start at 019201 and end at 039300....would it be safe to say I have a 82 J2 engine in my LTD?....the bike was "put" together with a mixture of parts as the swingarm is from a 80 or earlier KZ with the 4 needle bearings and the "zert" fitting....so could someone inform me where I might be wrong and do have an 82 LTD engine?....btw I bought the bike this way....with NO info....just hit and miss on the parts.....bruceB)

Double check the engine VIN series on www.zedder.com to confirm your conclusions.

I think I get what you are asking...you know your motor has been replaced, what style bike did it come from? Correct? Kawasaki had a tendency to use the same type of motor in a number of simultaneously produced bikes. For example, the 750(four) series early '80's (LTD, GPz (also ZX GPz's), Standard, etc.) all drew from the same series of motor numbers (the heads might be different, but the motors were fundamentally the same). It was no different with the 998cc KZ series...the M, K, J, and P bikes all drew from the same motor series and you cannot tell from a motor VIN which style bike the motor is associated with. So, to answer your original question, the replacement motor might have come from a J2, but it definitely came from a J engine series bike. BTW, the entire 998cc motor series is termed 'J' motor...but the 'J' bike was only the J1/2/3 standard.
