Need help fast!!!! plug threads was created by jordan
Alright, i was messing with the timing and my dyna s 2000 on my 810. I pulled the plugs to rotate the crank (all came out nicely), and after i was done i started putting the plugs back in. The #2 plug threaded a couple times and stopped, so i turned it a bit, and it was just getting harder to thread. I immediately stopped to prevent stripping the threads. I noticed that there was a small bit of metal shaving that came out with the plug. Looked in the hole with a flashlight, and noticed the first few threads were shiny like they were being stripped. The majority of the threads from the inside up are fine, and untouched. Is there any way i can clean up the threads without pulling the head? Like a tap or something? I need it running asap, any help would be appreciated

Has anybody used a spark plug thread chaser successfully?

Just coat the chaser with grease to try and catch any shavings?

when i got my z1 there were freakn heli coils in all the plug holes 3 came out with a compression test! i have a new head now i would recomend to go to kunkles auto or a machine shop and see if u can get a tap it kit for the threads. they should sell one to fit the sparkplug u bring in. i would use clean axel grease around the threads to stop shavings from getting in the head and only go a quarter of a turn at a time to get all the shavings out. that should help get the threads straight again

Imo best to use a "reverse plug tap" tool which retaps beginning from the DEEP end, thereby starting with the good threads and then continuing on up and out.

Not cheap, but cost is offset by time and parts needed to r&r head.

Good Luck! :)

That sounds like the perfect tool patton, i have never heard of one. How would you get a tool into the spark plug hole to clean out the inside threads first?

It goes inside and then expands. Will try to find a link to source and price.

Attempting to precisely start an ordinary tap or thread chaser from the top and have it dovetail perfectly into the good threads would imo be futile and only increase the damage. Am thinking most would concur with this prognosis.

Am thinking The Gringo has reported successfully using the tool.

Good Luck! :)

Click here > Reverse plug tap

There are probably other sources also, such as maybe "Snap-On" or other major tool suppliers or outlets.

Good Luck! :)

Thanks for finding that. Maybe a shop in town has the tool, but i can probably buy the tool for what they will charge to fix it. I was hoping to get it to a car and bike show this weekend, but may have to sit for a while now.

Well, after work i searched town and nobody had a back-tap on hand so i ended up getting a thread chaser. I was very careful, and coated the chaser with oil before tapping. Turned rough right away, but after about a second it threaded right into the existing threads. Good as new. Ran it in another time jsut to make it nice and clean. Thanks for all the fast help everyone.

Yep I bought one about a year ago and used it on 2 bikes where the PO had boogered up the threads a bit. The tool works slicker than snot on a doorknob. I bought mine from here.
