I bought my bike last summer from a friend at about this time of year. The clutch cable was new then. It broke yesterday. Are the motion pro cables any good?
Thanks
Tom

Unknown what you had in it to start with but with proper tension adjustments, cable lubrication, clutch operations a cable should last a good couple of years plus.

Jeff @ Z1 has them for ~ $10-15 pending models...

I looked on Z1 last night and its $15 cheap. The last one only lasted one season of riding.

All I can inform you is I obtained my clutch cable from Z1 and I was sent a Motion pro cable and have had no problems...

Kawasaki OEM cables ~ $35 plus tax... Maybe you need to go this route...

I had the same problem on my 76 KZ900, where they would snap once a year. Until I called Motion Pro, and found out that I was installing them wrong. Now I am getting over three years and going.

Mabey I wasnt clear. I ment the the price was cheap not the cable. I order just about all the parts I buy from Z1 just to help keep them around. I'll buy 2 from Z1 for the price of 1 oem cable.
Thanks

...

otakar .....Well don't keep us in suspense, do share what they informed you of....

Hell, hard to believe there a wrong/right way to do this on a clutch cable but I'm game for learning no doubt....
Seriously speaking! I'd like to know if I have a possible FUBAB coming if installed incorrectly....

Because as most of us know, that the cable almost always breaks at the top swedge, the trick is, how the upper adjusters are positioned. They should always be turned so that the cable pulls straight against the swdge, and is not rubbing against eny of the edges which make up the slot in the adjuster. Also the cable must be the right length. Most cables today are made as universal cables and are made purposely too long to fit more bikes. If you have a cable that is too long it will wind up making undesirable "S" turns and put undue stress against the swedge. Third thing is proper lubrication. I just went to "Motion Pro" and had them make me cables that are the exact length I needed. Most of us change handle bars and this actually causes problems with pull cables. A custom cable from Motion Pro cost me only about $30. but I hav not had to replace one since I installed it. This also saves time and a mess, as we all know it is to remove the countershaft sprocket cover and deal with the lower part of the cable on a KX1000 or 900.

Mine broke under the sprocket cover where it hooks to the clutch release. There is a spring missing that goes over the cable under the cover, could that cause my problem?
Thanks

That will definitely cause a problem. Because the bracket that the swedge rests in will flop around and the cable is free to bend while not under tension. Any light spring will do in its place that will hold constant pressure on the cable

The question is "How long should a clutch cable last "

Answer ....1 Year ....
Buy your bike NEW cables every year for Christmas.

Cheap to keep it happy, you end up with good spares and NEVER get stuck on the road with a busted cable.
