Trying to see if I can swap the head and cams from an 83 GPZ750 to a 1982 GPZ750? Any ideas on if it will work? The head gaskets are the same, but I haven't checked anything else. If so I may have a set of cams and a head if someone with a 650 wants to do the swap on their bike. I may even have the jugs for it. Anyways, just trying to check before committing to buying anything.

Thanks,
KC

I would look for part numbers on the head. I would think if it's an 82 and 83 they should be the same. The first obvious thing to check would be for the tach drive and cam gears. I don't remember when they went to the new style cam chain.

I'll take a look at the parts listings. Tach drive isn't a concern. My worry is all the passages and holes lining up along with the cam chain. As I understand it they changed the head somewhat for a higher compression, though this may be wrong as I am having trouble finding consistent specs for either year of GPZ for compression or power.

In case someone else goes looking, I'll save you the trouble.

Between the 83 and 82 models gpz750, the differences are in the:

-Cams
-Head assembly

Otherwise they use the same:

-jugs
-pistons
-head gasket
-valves
-cam chain
-cam chain sprokets
-valve cover gasket

I didn't bother checking the:

-valve guides
-valve seals
-cam caps

Hope this helps the next person. As far as I can tell the only thing hotter about the newer gpz750's would be a slightly different combustion chamber and hotter cams. Otherwise I can't see how different sources claim the compression ratio went from 9.0 or 9.5 to 10.5 or HP from 82 to 87 or 93. These are the numbers I've come across for 82 and 83 gpz750s respectivelly.
