Magnetic oil drain plug was created by gas
Check this out. Do you guys really find much metal caught by these magnets?

I use them on some of my truck engines and differentials Chris, and Princess Auto has a few sizes. The engine oil filter picks up the coarser stuff but I still get a little fine paste on the magnets at oil changes, which I wipe off with a rag. I get more and coarser stuff from the differentials where there is no filtration. I think it is a good idea.

I've seen them mentioned a few times here before. They want $8.99 + $2.20 shipping. Think I could find one locally cheaper? Do most auto parts stores carry them?

Anyone who doesnt run one Should.

IF it picks up anymore then a little silver colored dust that you can wipe off with a shop towel (like chips)Its time to think about saving some money to have a look inside .

I just pulled off my oil pan today, just to have a look and clean out any sludge that may have built up over the years. It was surprisingly clean but I did notice some metal flakes. I ran a magnet all around the bottom of the pan a few times and pulled out what seems like a lot of shavings. It's got me kinda concerned but maybe it isn't so bad if it's been building up for who-knows-how-long.



I'm gonna order a magnetic plug tomorrow and keep an eye on it to see if they continue to show up.

I've always used one, as mentioned before it gives a great indication of any wear in the engine. I remember Chrysler used to put a big round magnet in their transmission oil pans. They used to collect a lot of filings. It's a hell of a lot better than having them floating around in the oil.

That is a lot of iron Kevco and looks coarse, about like I have seen from differetial thrust washer wear in trucks, so my guess is most of it came from the transmission. Like you say, it probably accumulated over a long time. Just as a reference for you, my used motor oil iron analysis on my KZ550 runs anywhere from 20-30 ppm at a 2,200 mile drain interval, and the bike has 21,000 miles on it.
