WANTED: '80 KZ750E cam chain tensioner was created by Carr_113
I'm looking for a complete good/excellent condition cam chain tensioner of "split-wedge" type to replace the crappy OEM one on my KZ750. If anyone has one of these available, reply or PM me with asking price and pics if possible. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion, JR. I found the one I was looking for on eBay for cheap(ish), so I'll see how that works out.

Good for you

Saw your other post in Bike Related and replied thinking your rattle might be primary chain.

In my experience, all of Kawasaki's three KZ cam chain tensioner designs were flawed and will eventually bind, causing slack in your cam chain. The only solution is the APE tensioner, expensive as it is for a drilled out blank with a locknut!

Really the tensioners were pretty reliable. I'm not all that up on the 1981 up stuff, but the 77-78 KZ650/1000 manual tensioner worked perfect every time for me at least. The 650 I ride now has 65000 miles on it and the tensioner works fine, my old original with 167,000 miles the original tensioner went around 150,000 miles and was still working but the pushrod end was all beat up and beginning to crack. Still worked fine even cracked, but I threw on a used one just because I had 10 or so laying around. The 79-80 auto type with all the bad rap I never had an inkling of problem with either. I'm rather easy on equipment though. Don't see the need to redline every shift. I've read here the tensioners can back up in their bore when running high RPMs. I never run high RPM so can't comment there.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
