I'm trying to separate the barrels on my 77 KZ650 from the crank case. Are there any tips on how to get this done?
So far I've cracked two cooling fins.
I have heard of putting Coke-a-cola on the joint as a release agent or penetrant.

Any advances on Coke.........?

I usually start by whacking up on the cylinders with a rubber hammer, trying not to hit on any fragile parts. I don't know about the 650 but my 900 engine has a slot on each end of the cylinders right at the parting line between the cases and the cylinders, which I can then get a decent screwdriver in and pry up. If you can get it a little bit loose then you can pry up at strategic locations. Look for where there are little reinforcing posts between the fins.

Good luck.

Nope, I had to go check to make sure, and the only bolts that hold the cylinder block on are the studs that also hold the head on.

Red, there are spots between the cases and the cylinders to get a small pry bar into or some old screwdrivers.(Had the same problem last year after the bike sat for 15++ yrs)I found there is alot of debris that gets between the studs and the cylinder mounting holes.Once you get it to start to move work it up and down to loosen that garbage around the studs. Good luck

Thanks for the input guy's. There are two little slots at each end of the barrels to get a screw driver or very small pry bar for leverage, but they dont seem to be very deep. I had two long screw drivers, one in each end and went around the barrels using a rubber hammer but the bugger just won't budge.
I guess patience and persistance will pay off eventually.

Another trick is to turn the engine over a couple of times. Sometimes this will loosen the jug up.

Shoot something like PB Blaster around the stud bolts?

I whacked the h*ll out of my 650 with a rubber mallet to get the block off, took some time, and even once it would come up a little bit, I had to force it up and down a lot becaue of corrosion/junk on the studs before it would lift off all the way. good luck
