Hey guys, it's been a while since I've been on the site. Love the new look, dial up keeps me from getting around as much as I use to. Anyway, I am planning on adding an air shifter to my 78 KZ 1000. I know that I need to install an undercut transmission, and over shift bushing, which I have. My big question is, to pull the bottom case off the engine do I have to take down the top end. I've pulled the oil pan on a previous occasion to check for a possible broken shift fork( long story, maybe another time) and the way it looks I should be able to pull the engine, drain the oil, flip the engine over, pull the covers on both sides and unbolt the bottom half. It just sounds to easy, which it maybe. I just don't want down time because I don't have a complete gasket set and have to wait a week while my engine is collecting dust and I'm losing points. I have no problems with taking the whole thing down, it was all rebuilt a year ago. I didn't have the for site at the time to have the trans done then. Thanks for any help I really appreciate it.

You don't have to do the undercut transmission to run an air shifter but it's recommended. But judging by your avatar then you probably should do the trans while you're there.

I'm trying to go through my head and I think you can get away with just splitting the cases without removing the top-end. I'm sure someone who does more engine work tan me will chime in here soon.

Not sure about the answer to your question...but it appears to be running well. Out of curiosity, What kind of 60' and 1/4 times are you running and what mods have been done? Launch RPM?

Thanks.

you can tear the bottom end apart with out touching the top end in fact cometic gaskets sell a bottomend gasket kit for just that reason.

Hey Davel, its pretty much a stock chassis I could put a tag on it and ride on the road. But I don't, I have a set off 29mm smooth bores, just had a 1075cc kit installed last year, running a Vance and Hines sidewinder header and can w/ no baffle, and a Dyna ignition and shiftlight. That's about the extent of the mods, and as i said its still stock in weight, length, and height. My best 60' is a 1.67 which I've only pulled once, most of the times its about 1.70 and clicking 2nd with the front in the air. I am currently running points at a 1/8 mile and I am more geared for such. I run 7.40 to 7.50 pretty consistently, launching at 6000 rpms, but I have been to the 1/4 mile recently and she runs around 11.90s. I'm going to turn her into an all out sleeper, once I drop the heavy Lester Mags and fit on light weight rotors with the lighten/raked chassis I working on I expect mid 6's in the 1/8 and mid to high 10's in the 1/4. And Doug, I'll wait around and hopefully some one has done this before or at least tried, we'll see what happens. I can't wait to long though I should pick up the chassis this week and want to change the trans before the engine goes back into the new chassis. Glad you like the avatar, 1st Rnd Elem, 1st point race. Thanks for the input and inquires. Talk soon.

i'm running 10.60's and 50's on a regular basis at around 3200 feet with a high compression 1015 motor with 29 smoothies so you should be able to run in the high 10's no problem my street bike with a 1075 and 29's has run as quick as 10.79 at 121 mph on street tires so it can be done.

Hey Time, I was pretty sure that I could do the change without pulling the top end apart. As far as the times in the quarter, I'm running a 14t front sprocket and a 42t rear on a 630 roller chain. Plus the Lester's weigh a ton so they are like pulling anchors down the track, but they look good. Once I drop some of the fat from her, I can't lose anymore or my ribs will touch my back, I know she will roll. There is a lot I'm leaving on the table still and just need the right parts to do the job. Thanks for the input. Charles.

Hey Charles, Those are good numbers from a 1075 with a stock cam.

Timebomb, very impressive from your 1075 esp at 3200ft with a street tire! Can you give some details on your combination? Thanks.
