The solenoid just conducts the starting current from the battery to the starter through imternal heavy gauge contacts.
If you bridge these contacts externally with a pair of pliers or screwdriver and the same thing happens,I'd check the starting mechanism for binding. I.E. does the engine turn over easy with the plugs removed with a wrench on the crankshaft? On the larger 4's after the point cover is removed and the sparkplugs taken out, the engine can be tuned over to check and adjust valve clearances.

Oh this is getting old...
The motor turns over by hand fine as far as i can tell. It didn't start doing this until i took the head off. Maybe I should just go back and redo it? Is there anything in the line of camchain/camshaft or anything with a head removal that could bind up the motor?

ok, this just doesn't make sense to me... If i loosen all the bolts holding on the stator cover, and tighten them only finger tight, everything works and the bike turns over... I guess this is how it is supposed to be? I just really dont want it flying off when i'm on the road...

If you look at the inside of the stator cover can you see any marks where something may be rubbing? Ed
