Different Engine Knock was created by grumpy56
Morning. J2 engine runs great and no unusual noises anytime EXCEPT, when cold and am on 1/2 choke and it is barely at 1K RPM, the engine knocks like crazy. Rev it up and its OK. Should I kcik up my idle? Any other suggestions? Thank you.

If not already done, adjusting camchain tension plus good carb sync will reduce a crunchy idle.

But when cold and on 1/2 choke at 1000 rpm, the engine is likely struggling regardless of other settings.

Good Luck! :)

Thanks Patton. I have an auto adjuster for the cam chain plus as far as I know my carbs are properly synched. My best bet might be just to give it a bit of throttle when warming up to avoid the sounds of pain.

primary chain knock? i get that at times, sometimes its pretty loud. i was told to keep the idle at 1500 and it goes away. once the bike is warm i dont have the noise at all. really freaked me out when i bought it last fall.

Did you recently put in 20/50 oil? If so get it out and use 10/40. Mine and few other people in here used 20/50 and all of our bikes knocked until we changed it out.

keep either 20/50 in it or 10-40 no less and for every body that does not know the big kz's don't have a primary drive chain they use gearsone on the crank one on the basket the noise you are hearing is excess backlash in the primary drive gears it happens to alot of bikes when first fired and they are having a tough time trying to figure out wether they want to run or not sometimes it can be lessend by a proper carb sync or by leaving the enrichner [choke ]on a bit longer or by upping the rpm a bit at idle not a big issue guy's as long as it goes away after it warms up. in the heat of the summer definitly use 20-50 and change it more often then normal, oil is cheap engines are expensive.

Appreciate the info. Started it old today and just kept the RPMs up a little for about 30 seconds and I didn't notice the dreaded knock.
