Hey all;
It's been awhile since I last posted anything. Have been doing alot of work on this 2000 Kz1000 P-19 ... (me and a couple of bros). Have done everything to get this old girl looking and running like new. Stripped her down to pieces, cleaned 'em all up, replaced what needed replacing. The re-wire was a breeze seeing how all the accessories are gone. One of the last things we did though was to check out the clutch. One of the plates was discolored more than the rest....they are all still in great shape.... but we "shuffled" them. The discolored one we traded positions with another one. And put everything back together, feeling proud of our accomplishment. That lasted until I hopped on for her first ride in years. The engine turned over smooth, the idle was perfect, nothing left undone... until I try and shift from 1st to 2nd.
All this work being done and the @*#! thing won't shift. So we take the clutch apart again check everything over 3 or 4 times, put her back together and still only 1st gear.

I would really appreciate any tips tricks or just general "this is how you do it" information.

There is power in words...just don't put too many together.

I assume you are actually riding the bike when you try to shift? You can't shift to second at a standstill.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

like ron said the bike has to be moving in order to shift in to second.

Heel and toe shifter? If so make sure you are not bottoming out on the floorboard.

Can you get to neutral from first or are you locked in first?

With the engine off, do you hear a click when you shift into first and roll the bike a bit? Can you shift into 2 engine off?
