Question for Leon was created by T_Dub
Other people can probably answer this but I know Leon can. When boring cylinders, what clearance do you leave between the walls and the pistons before the hone? I want to bore my cylinders myself and get the local shop to hone, because they have the correct machine. I really dont see the need to pay someone over $100 to bore though when I can do that myself easily.

You have the correct machine to bore cyclinders ? Boring is precision work. Honing is nothing.

I get within a tolerance of .005" normally, I'd imagine thats good enough. .002" is possible if I'm careful.

.005" is definitely not good enough for boring cylinders. Standard clearance spec for piston to cylinder on mine is .0016" - .0028". BTW: pistons taper top to bottem and are widest at the skirt. The machine shop that did mine required I give them the pistons so they could measure them, then they marked them to the hole they were matched to.I get within a tolerance of .005" normally, I'd imagine thats good enough. .002" is possible if I'm careful.

Alrighty, I'll get the shop to do it then, after I get my pistons, so they can measure. I actually meant .0005, but it'd suck if I screwed it up.

The pistons are measured near the bottom. i dont think all manufacturers use the same spot. J&E measures 1/2" up from the bottom, front to back. they may be oval shaped as well.
