GPz Oil Cooler Question was created by T_Dub
Does anybody know what the ID is on the rubber tubes on a 1983 GPz750 oil cooler? I'm looking at getting a thermostat for mine, so I don't over cool in Newfoundland's cool climate.

I know some people say that if you don't live in the desert you don't need a cooler. I figure after I bore out to 810 I might need it for warm days. Opinions?

Oil coolers are not installed from factory to cool the engine. They are to prevent the oil from getting too hot if you ride your bike hard. In the 80's most air cooled Japanese bikes shipped to US did not have oil coolers. But same bikes shipped to Europe would have them, to cope with the more "sport" oriented Euro rider.

Air cooled is out of favor, of course, but today, any factory making one would install one. I would not be with/out one.

Yeah thats what I've been thinking. I'm a vert "sport" oriented rider so I think I'll use it.

Now does anyone know how big those rubber hoses are?

I replaced the oil cooler lines years ago on my 82 GPZ1100 B2. I can't remember the exact size maybe 3/8" I.D. Have you gone to www.americanclassix.com and looked at the fittings they have? I think www.redlinecycle.com has similar ones.

Oh I dont need fittings, I've got a GPz750 oil pan as well, they tell me it'll just bolt on and then I just bolt on the cooler.

3/8 sounds about right when I think about it, the lines aren't huge. I found a mocal thermostat on fleabay for a good price but it has 1/2" outlets.

You might have to make an adapter from one size to the other to make the thermostat work. Copper or brass tubing cut to size and forced into the hose should work with some hose clamps.

I like to use the ones designed for fuel injection systems as they don't have the worm gear slots in them cutting through the hoses.
