Starter Clutch: Is This a Symptom? was created by bountyhunter
All the talk about how bad the old 750 twin starter clutches are has me paranoid. Mine seems to work OK, it engages and releases.... but lately, I have noticed something that has happened twice so far that I know of. While idling, I hear a quick "clack" and feel a twitch through the handlebars. It is a metal-metal sound.
The clack sounds like the same clack I hear if the engine "kicks back" during starting and smacks the starter clutch, so I was wondering if this occasional sound is a symptom of a bad starter clutch?
I know that inertia keeps the rollers back so at idle they might wander over and get in the wronfg place if they were going to do that.
I can't think of anything else that would be doing it.

H2A Built from a genuine basket case. Yes,it's a hot rod.
GT550A Stock/mint. Pleasant stroker.

Various H2 projects in the wings.

If your starter clutch is behind the flywheel (and I am certainly NO expert on the 750 twin) I'd pull the flywheel and check everything out just for laughs. Might just save yourself a bundle.
Another thought....has the cam chain tensioner been looked at/adjusted lately ?? If not, then it might just be a good idea to check it out as well. If it's a manual one then adjust it. If it's a Mark I or Mark II automatic tensioner and you haven't had it apart for quite awhile then EITHER type needs looking at by now. Both are piss-poor designs
...the Achilles heel of the early Kwak four stokes.
Unfortunately they didn't get it really right until the water cooled 900s and 600s came out.

Cam chain tensioner is mnual and it seems to be adjusted OK.
The starter clutch is behind the flywheel and a royal pain to take off.
