External Shift Mechanism was created by Little B
I it over the weekend due to attempting to diagnose the jumping out of gear problem. To my novice eye, it all looks good. I don't see any severe wear on the arms that go around and move the pins on the shift drum. The pins themselves don't seem worn either.

The banana spring does have a gap when both arms are touching...is that normal?

How do you know if the return spring needs to be replaced? If I take it off and the two ends cross over one another, does that mean its good?

Is there anything else I should check/replace while I've got it off?

B, You've gone a long way to draw up short. jumping out of gear w/ load applied is usually a combination of worn internal dogs/recievers and shift forks. strongly rec. replacing any sets which show rounding/contact at faces, and fork which show more than polishing at more than 1/2 pad surface. trans bits are a fine read, it only takes 1 miss- shift to bend a fork. which there after fails to fully engage. shift machanism is rarely a prob w/ jumping out of gear. luck G

Not an easy fix. You will have to go in the motor to make it right.

sometimes the shifter mechinisim springs weaken or break but you can usally feel that in the shifter one other thing to check is the actual shifter it self sometimes it will back off and cause you to miss gear shifts but if it is actually jumping out of gear it probably internal worn out shift dogs or bent shift forks both will cause it to jump out but sometimes if it isnt going in all the way because of a loose shifter it can kick out to .

Thank you guys.

It is a 1981 KZ750 LTD. I really don't want to have to go into the engine unless I absolutely have to.

My reasoning was to check the simple easy-to-get-at stuff first. With any luck, that will take care of the problem. :cheer: The service manual does mention the external shifter mechanism as a possible cause of this kind of problem. I've also searched around on the forum and noticed WiredGeorge say he's seen those springs weaken and cause this issue as well.

Fingers crossed...
