I know we have a current ring compressor thread going, so I didnt want to hijack that one, but I want to hear from you guys on the oil rings.

I got my 650B back together, I didnt really have any problems getting the rings back in, just took a little patience and some oil on the cylinder walls.

But I have a stuck ring on the #2 cylinder and it smokes. The #2 plug is wet with oil, and the piston top is oil wetted as well. So I'm about to lift the cylinder back up and fix that #2 cylinder. So I want to ask about the placement of the oil control rings. The book shows all the ring gaps at the back, except the upper compression ring, I assume thats how everyone does it?

When you guys put the oil rings in, are you putting in the 2 thin steel rings first before the garter, or do you put the garter in first and then the steel rings? Its been like a month now and I dont remember what I did. I obviously got 3 right, and 1 is screwed up.

I must have gotten the garter overlapped on itself and it cant pop out into place . Anyone else have anything similar?

the it's called an expander ring by the way goes in the ring land first then the two thin rings go in it is very important not to overlap the expander ring and also it is very easy to snag the thin chrome rings when installing them in the block one other thing to pay close attention to is how the compression ring and the scraper ring are installed the will be i.d marks on the top of the rings put the rings on the piston so that the marks are face up if they are upside down then you can run into major oil smoking and oil use problems.

Ok, from the book:

Position each piston ring so that the opening (gap) in the TOP and OIL ring of each piston faces forwards, and the SECOND ring opening faces the rear. The openiings of the oil ring steel rails must be slipped to both directions about 30 degrees from the opening in the expander. See pic:

yes there is there will be a number or the letters rn or a dot somekind of mark look closely and you will find it about the only rings that wont have it will be chrome top rings and the oil control rings very few motors have the chrome top ring i always stagger the rings around 90 degrees apart as long as they don't line up it seems to be fine the factory calls for 120 degrees but that is just so that you do make the effort to stagger them it's not like engine won't run if they aren't excactly 120 apart.

its all back apart, and my pistons/rings are ART. there are no steps on any of the rings, and no part numbers. Both upper compression rings are identical. And I didnt see any rings caught or stuck or overlapped. But some seemed a little tight in the ring land. I did scrape the ring lands before, I will do it again. This sucks doing it in the frame
