No Compression in 1981 KZ750 was created by gojomagic
I am trying to repair a 1980? possibly '81 or '82 750. I was told it is a KZ750, but the side covers say LTD. I am new to Kawasaki's and multi-cylinder four strokes in general, so any help would be appreciated.
When I got the bike I was told that the previous rider had put about 200 miles on it before his #3 cylinder seemed to quit working. By quit working, I mean, the header pipe was cold to the touch while the other 3 cylinders were relatively hot. could have been fuel could have been no spark or compression...I don't know. Long story short, some "guy" ripped it apart and put it back together and now there is mysteriously no compression in any cylinder. Could it be the timing chain was installed incorrectly or the head has a leak somewhere? I don't even know where to start, so could someone please give me a hand? Thank you in advance.

Can you get a shop manual for this bike? Go to www.wgcarbs.com and look in their download section. They have many bikes listed. Having the valve train out of time with the pistons can do serious damage. Get a manual so you can check timing marks to what piston action is.

On the right side of the engine(as you sit on the seat) is a CD sized cover at the end of the crankshaft. With the sparkplugs removed you should be able to carefully turn the engine over with a 17MM socket and ratchet to see if things are bound up. Try this first before further dis-assembly.

Let the forum know what you've found.

take off the valve cover and check the cam timing or do a leakdown test. that is as good aplace to start as any if he put the cams in out of phase he could have bent all the valves and that could be why you have no compression.
